How Can Colleges Prep Student Athletes for the ‘Real-world’?
Are student-athletes planning for the ‘real-world’ after graduation or are they betting on a professional career in their given sport?
Looking at the statistics released by the NCAA (http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/research/estimated-probability-competing-professional-athletics) on the estimated probability of competing in professional athletics, student-athletes undoubtedly need a ‘real-world’ plan after graduation. According to the NCAA, baseball has the highest probability of making it pro at 9.8%, followed by mens ice hockey at 6.9%. Lower down the list is football where only 1.6% make it to the NFL, and following that around 1% of men and women college basketball players convert from collegiate to the professional level.
Students shouldn't be discouraged by these statistics. Making it pro may have been their goal at one time, but with a degree in their pocket and the outstanding skills they have gained from playing sports at the collegiate level, they are a step ahead of the other graduates entering the job market.
Companies specifically look to hire former student-athletes who are not only college educated but also come with other skills that cannot be taught in the classroom; a winning attitude, a team-player, motivated, coachable, competitive, great time management, a natural leader. These are the qualities that make student-athletes stand out from the crowd and will lead them to promising careers in the corporate world.
